Pamporovo lies in the tree-covered Rhodope Mountains in the southeast of Bulgaria. It is often described as the southernmost ski centre in Europe, though there are several resorts further south in Greece.
Pamporovo is at the centre of a huge winter sports redevelopment plan called the Perelik Project. This 400 million euro venture will link the resort with new runs being created on the neighbouring Perelik mountain and existing facilities in villages nearby.
Work has already started and when complete, there will be 14 new ski runs which will double the current length of piste. Skiing will be possible for more weeks of the year because Perelik is a higher than Pamporovo's Snezhanka peak and the project features more than 1,500 snow cannons.
In addition, there will be a 35,000 square meter snowpark for boarders and facilities for tobogganing, sledging and snow-biking.

As well as the excellent skiing, Pamporovo is a perfect base for recreation such as mountain walking, horse trekking or fishing.
Again, these facilities will all be improved under the Perelik Project, which also includes plans for mountain biking, hang-gliding and carting.
There is also plenty of sightseeing with sites such as the Bachkovo Monastery and Assen's Fortress within a short drive.
Pamporovo is not the type of resort where you are located in a vast area of concrete. It is relatively small and many of the complexes are dotted among the pine forests, giving you a sense of tranquility.
However, there are plenty of bars, restaurants and clubs in the centre of town for when you want to get out or hit the nightlife.
Several of the restaurants have the added advantage that they will pick you up and drop you back again for free.
